SKAR Ateliers Het Archief

The Archive is a creative breeding ground in a former Archive in the center of Rotterdam

The Archive is a creative breeding ground in the former archive of the Municipality of Rotterdam. Root Foundation and Skar Ateliers have joined forces to develop Het Archief into a dynamic place where maker and market meet.

The unique building was designed by municipal architect André van Stekelenburg and is characterized by the grid of columns, with narrow windows and low ceilings that suited the former archive function. In the outdoor area there is a work of art by artist Peter Struycken on display; a 1969 design of black/white lines and surfaces on the paving, fencing, facades and fence.

The building offers studio/work spaces to artists, collectives and cultural entrepreneurs. Due to its special architecture and central location, Het Archief is also a popular location for various meetings and events from various parties in the city. From meetings and corporate events, to exhibitions and photo shoots. Different disciplines and visions come together in a special location. The proceeds from rental contribute to the art program for Rotterdam artists that Root Foundation organizes within the building.
