Artists pose for their wedding at TENT

Jeroen Veenstra

From 22 November to 21 February, TENT is exploring the theme of weddings. For *Lace Stories*, artists from different generations and cultural backgrounds are working with the images, objects and customs associated with marriage: the veil, the wedding ring, the wedding dress and the wedding feast. Featuring work by Grazia Gallo, Julia Zynger, Merijne Spits, Aysen Kaptanoglu, Yesum Yoon, Giovani Kongo and Magdalena Petrova. Curated by Aubane Berthommé Martinez and produced by Kenza H. Bianco on behalf of Kapish.

The exhibition features paintings, sculptures, installations, photography and interactive works. Some artists focus on the work and the emotional expectations behind the image of the happy couple. Others work with household materials, craft traditions, bridal attire, the veil, the wedding ring or other ceremonial objects. A number of artists use humour and alienation to subvert familiar images. Still others draw on personal memories, folklore and physical experience.

Together, the works form a polyphonic whole. Each artist brings their own perspective, and those perspectives may clash. The exhibition does not seek to impose any particular view on marriage upon visitors. Instead, it invites them to take a closer look at a familiar ritual.

TENT has designed the exhibition as a living environment. The open layout gives each work its own space and leaves room for unexpected connections. Visitors are invited to get involved and contribute. Over the course of the exhibition, the space thus fills with traces of encounters and conversations.

Opening

Lace Stories opens on Saturday 21 November with performances, a wedding cake competition and live music.
