WASUI opens a new flagship matcha café and shop on Nieuwe Binnenweg
The Japanese matcha brand WASUI has opened a new flagship café and shop on Nieuwe Binnenweg. Visitors can sample single-origin matcha, make their own tea and discover Japanese design and craftsmanship.
Since 11 September 2026, Rotterdam has had a new venue for matcha lovers. The Japanese brand WASUI has opened its flagship café and shop on Nieuwe Binnenweg. The venue combines Japanese tea culture with a contemporary café experience.
WASUI specialises in first-harvest, single-origin matcha from Japan, with a focus on organic varieties. The menu includes signature matcha, matcha latte, botanical and coconut varieties, and a matcha affogato. Various types of single-origin matcha and Japanese tea sets are available in the shop.
A matcha you make yourself
What makes the Rotterdam branch special is that visitors can prepare their own matcha. Wearing headphones, they take the time to listen to the sounds and whisk their tea with a traditional whisk. The team then finishes off the drink. The experience is inspired by elements of Japanese tea culture, but adapted to a contemporary setting. Not as a formal ceremony, but as a brief moment of mindfulness in the heart of the city.
Japanese design on the Nieuwe Binnenweg
The interior, too, reflects this blend of tradition and contemporary design. The space was designed by mist-o, an Italian-Japanese design duo. Handcrafted straw objects by the Tokyo-based craft design collective Straft add an extra layer of Japanese craftsmanship.
