History of The Castle

Het Kasteel is the historic stadium of the Rotterdam football club Sparta Rotterdam. The stadium has been in use since 1916 and is known as one of the oldest football stadiums in the Netherlands. The name "Het Kasteel" refers to the distinctive architecture of the main building, which literally features two towers that give the stadium a unique appearance. Over the years, Het Kasteel has witnessed many memorable moments in Dutch football history.

Renovation and Current Condition

Between 1998 and 1999, Het Kasteel underwent a major renovation. During this reconstruction, the playing field was rotated a quarter turn. As a result, the stadium's original main entrance is now integrated into the long side of the stands. This renewal has modernized the stadium while preserving its historic character and identity. Het Kasteel remains an important symbol for Sparta Rotterdam and the city of Rotterdam.
