Fort 1881 Hoek van Holland

Fort 1881 is important cultural heritage and the best-preserved coastal defense fort in the Netherlands. Discover the role the Fort played during both world wars in the museum.

History

The Netherlands built Fort 1881 at the end of the nineteenth century to protect the port of Rotterdam. When the fort was completed in 1881, it was by far the most modern fort in Europe, with six cannons in three gun turrets.

You can 'get lost' in the ancient tunnel systems. Along the way, you will experience the remarkable stories of this coastal defense fort. Where did the troops sleep? How were the soldiers able to survive a siege? What did the Germans do in the fort? Additionally, there is material on display regarding the excavation of the Nieuwe Waterweg and the origins of Hoek van Holland, as well as a scale model of the ingenious water management system in the fort.

Event venue

In addition to the museum, the Fort is also suitable as an event venue. Various team-building activities are possible, such as Fort Ministerie. Additionally, you can take a guided tour or organize a tasting, even concluding with a BBQ. The location is also suitable as an event venue for a wedding or even a festival; there are plenty of options.
