One Drawing a Day
In memory of Gertjan Zuilhof
Some people write. Others run until their thoughts calm down. Gertjan Zuilhof, who worked as a film programmer at IFFR for over 25 years, drew. "Like a monk," he said: one drawing a day. A simple discipline, a way to remain present in the world.
For nearly a quarter of a century, Gertjan was one of IFFR's most influential film programmers. Never content with the obvious, he continually expanded the festival's horizons, encompassing Africa, Southeast Asia, and beyond, in search of voices yet unheard or unseen on the Rotterdam silver screen. With bold choices, mentorships, and tireless dedication, he helped open the door for generations of filmmakers.
During his travels, Gertjan was a keen observer. He meticulously photographed, drew, and archived the everyday, capturing fleeting moments in lines and notes. He drew on discarded materials such as envelopes, newspapers, and hotel notepads.
After his serious illness in Japan in 2024, his world shrank. His practice didn't. He remained faithful to his daily ritual, one drawing a day, until the end.
This exhibition remembers Gertjan as he was: astute, generous, and fully present. And it invites you to draw, not in search of perfection, but simply to begin.
