Morgan & Mees presents new restaurant and bar concept: MIES

Jeroen Veenstra

In 1938, Mies Lanen, a businesswoman known from Schoevers and a champion of women's emancipation, had a building on Mathenesserlaan built as a training institute for young women. Later, Rijnmond was located there and for several years Morgan & Mees has been there, a boutique hotel with restaurant. From 15 October, the new independent restaurant and bar concept is open: MIES. A lively place where good food, art and community come together.

Mies Lanen lived on the top floor, offering women an alternative to a future behind the kitchen sink. Now, almost a century later, her spirit is being revived with a concept that once again gives space to power, creativity and progress. MIES is an ode to her legacy, wrapped in a contemporary total experience. From a cocktail at the bar, a cultural event or a sumptuous dinner. With MIES, Rotterdam gains a special hotspot where past and future come together.

Led by chef Lucas Jeffries, MIES serves an à la carte menu as well as a three- to five-course chef's menu from Wednesday to Saturday. On Sundays, a rich family lunch is served. The chef is inspired by the history, mission and vision of MIES's community, putting a modern twist on Dutch classic dishes. It's all about seasonal produce, local suppliers and attention to detail.

The bar is a place for spontaneous gatherings, with an extensive menu full of characterful bites and cocktails. From Sunday to Tuesday, the restaurant serves breakfast and lunch. In the evening, there is an extensive bar menu and a daily changing daily snack, inspired by the culinary history of Dutch cuisine.

MIES wants to show that hospitality can be more than hospitality. A powerful platform for new voices, emerging creators and meaningful encounters. Every quarter, an artist gets the stage, visible throughout the building in cooperation with ArtPublicity. The festive reveal drinks will introduce Rotterdam to new work by emerging talent. The first artist to exhibit is Melissa Moria. In addition, MIES regularly programmes cultural evenings, with live music, small-scale performances and space for encounters.
