WINTERREISE | Franz Schubert Merlijn Runia & Mark van Nispen

Schubert based his cycle on Die Winterreise by Wilhelm Müller. In 24 strophic poems, a man explores the sorrow of losing his beloved. It is a wintry journey along hope, memory, despair, anger, resignation and madness, and ultimately – the transition to death? Soprano Merlijn Runia and pianist Mark van Nispen want to try and recapture some of the chilling intimacy that Schubert's friends must have experienced when he asked them to listen for the first time to this still-impressive cycle in a Viennese attic room in 1827, in which Schubert lets us look deeper into his soul than ever before.
