In the solo exhibition Loss, Hope and Wonder, Marjan Laaper presents five video installations in which animals take center stage, inviting the viewer to stillness, reflection, and wonder.
Marjan Laaper approaches video as a sculptural medium: tranquil, monumental, and spatially present. Her videos are filmed from a single, fixed vantage point—that of the viewer—so they connect directly with their experience of time and space. In the exhibition, the works are often presented larger than life, projected onto architectural elements, or specifically tailored to the space.
The darkened exhibition space has been transformed into an environment where time seems to stand still, stretching out infinitely. This is reinforced by the video projections, which utilize slowing, repetition, and frozen time.
Animals play the leading role in the videos. They appear as moving images reminiscent of photographs or sculptures. At the same time, it is precisely these animal apparitions that seem alive: autonomous beings with feelings, consciousness, and their own symbolic power. The installations invite the viewer to stillness, reflection, and wonder.
