Westerkadekunst

Former captain's house from 1890 on the Westerkade in Rotterdam. Opened in 2017 as Galerie Maaskoe but is now called Westerkadekunst. It is an independent exhibition space for contemporary art on the Maas in Rotterdam.

About Westerkadekunst

Westerkadekunst exhibits surprising work by artists who are at the beginning of their careers, but we also like to show developments by more established names. Always under the condition that there is a unique and original signature.

For us, art should appeal to the heart and be primarily visually interesting, without extensive explanation beforehand. We find work that raises questions more attractive than work that provides answers.

We are actively trying to broaden our reach by attracting new audiences. We are convinced that there are many people who are touched by art without realizing it. Our challenge is to convince people who do not have purchasing art in their system to make a purchase.

The gallery was founded in 2017 by Davy Pieters (as Maaskoe Galerie) and is located in a classic building on the Maas in Rotterdam's Scheepvaartkwartier, the renowned district close to the center and the important museums. On average we organize 10 exhibitions per year, plus a Summer Salon, where we offer young figurative painters a platform. We mainly exhibit paintings and sculptures, but there is also room for photography, prints, ceramics and installations. The artists often come from Rotterdam and also from the rest of the country and possibly beyond.

We are open to collaboration and exchange with other (including foreign) galleries and want to bring more dynamism and diversity to the art supply. Although our focus is on the visual arts, we hope in the future to also pay attention to hybrids with other disciplines such as music, poetry, theater and science.
