In her series Techno Baroque, Polina Surovova explores the moment when humanity embarked on this path: away from nature and towards civilization as we know it today.
Origin of the series
Polina Surovova started the Techno Baroque series after the birth of her daughter in 2023. Her child growing up led the artist to reflect on human development. We were once closer to nature. Small children still strongly resemble animals. Gradually, they develop into humans.
Baroque and modernity
Polina uses Baroque motifs and techniques. She combines these with contemporary symbols, thus connecting different eras. The Baroque brought about a change in human thought due to the rapid development of science and industry. As a result, humanity became alienated from nature. According to some, this development continues to this day.
The modern condition
In Techno Baroque, Polina explores how humanity strayed from nature. She examines the development of the civilization we know today. She focuses on three pillars of modernity: medicine, technology, and weapons. The images from her paintings can be seen as symbols of this modern era.
