Sullivan Fortner Trio

Pianist Sullivan Fortner is a firm believer in swing and the power of the blues. These ingredients form the basis of his playing, which blossomed in the gospel church in New Orleans, the city where he grew up and started playing the piano at the age of 7. After studying for his master's degree in New York, he accompanied renowned American musicians such as Roy Hargrove, Christian Scott and Stefon Harris and developed his unprecedented virtuoso and versatile style.

Fortner won a Grammy for his contribution to the album The Window, which he made with jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. He previously played in LantarenVenster with Peter Bernstein, Ben Wendel and the Clayton Brothers. In 2019 he took first place in the Downbeat Critics Polls in no less than two categories: Rising Star Jazz Artist and Rising Star Pianist.

Fortner wants to maintain tradition, but at the same time let the music evolve. He looks for connections between different styles that are simultaneously deeply soulful and inventive. On the legendary label Impulse! Records he released the album Aria, and on Decca Records the record Moments Preserved. Recently the impressive Solo Game was added, a beautiful double album with mainly his own compositions. After a solo performance he will return to LantarenVenster with his trio and he will play work from his latest album that has yet to be released!
