In Mexico, they believe that the souls of the deceased return to the world of the living once a year. During Día de los Muertos, streets are decorated with flowers, candles and skeletons, and music and laughter can be heard everywhere. It is a celebration full of memories, in which sadness and joy go hand in hand.
Grote Mensen, in co-production with Maas theater en dans, brings this celebration to the theater with Skeletje, a visual, playful and moving performance about death, mourning and memories. How does it feel when someone is no longer there? Can you still dance when you are a skeleton? And how do you keep someone alive in stories and rituals?
In Skeletje we follow two players who make a journey between life and death. With slapstick, music, and a touch of magic they build a colorful memorial place full of stories and memories. The performance takes you into a world where nothing is what it seems: suitcases change into altars, flowers grow out of nowhere, and skeletons dance happily through the space. What starts as an empty stage, fills with flowers, flags, candles and happy memories. The sadness may be there, but so is the party. A sparkling ode to life!
