RAUWfest
With Benjamin Herman Trio ft. Tomoaki Baba • Oasis Boom • Cocobolo
On 5, 6 and 7 November, RAUWfest will take over Rotterdam with an exciting mix of raw, contemporary and jazz-related music from Morocco, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium and Japan. Expect intimate concerts, energetic live shows and boundary-pushing music at Studio De Zolder (5 November), Rotown (6 November) and BIRD (7 November).
The line-up at Rotown (6 November):
Benjamin Herman Trio + Tomoaki Baba (NL/JP) Jazz, electronica, no wave and improvisation come together in The Tokyo Sessions by saxophonist Benjamin Herman, inspired by the idiosyncratic underground scene of Tokyo. Together with double bassist Thomas Pol and drummer Jimmi Jo Hueting, he is joined by Japanese tenor saxophonist Tomoaki Baba, known from the album Electric Rider and the anime Blue Giant. Dutch and Japanese jazz meet in an adventurous set full of experiment and improvisation.
Cocobolo Resonant guitars, driving drums and the raw energy of sixties surf: Cocobolo gives the genre a serious kick forward. On the new EP Shooting From the Hip, the instrumental trio mixes vintage surf with western into a gritty, restless sound. A contemporary twist on the sound that Dick Dale helped put on the map 65 years ago with Let’s Go Trippin’.
Oasis Boom (FR) Raw rock, surf, drone, hypnotic electronica and club rhythms: Oasis Boom pulls the classic rock duo wide apart. Drummer Melissa Acchiardi and guitarist Vincent Duchosal build a sound that is constantly in motion with booming drums, distorted guitars and synths. Live, everything flows together into one long trip in which improvisation, grooves and experiment constantly alternate.
