New Store Zandsieraden Workshop
During this workshop by designer and researcher Irma Földényi, you will learn more about her design practice and make your own sand brooch.
Sand Jewellery is a series of jewelry by designer and researcher Irma Földényi (STUDIO IF). They are made from sand as an alternative to rare precious metals. During the workshop, you will learn more about her design practice while creating your own Sand Jewellery brooch. Gold, silver, and platinum; diamonds, sapphires, and rubies: jewelry is known for the use of rare precious metals and stones. Designer Irma Földényi explores an alternative: sand. Nature takes thousands of years to erode rock into grains of sand, after which the material is endlessly exploited by humans for economic gain. Földényi creates her jewelry by mixing sand with fish glue, a natural binding agent. Upon contact with water, the jewelry dissolves completely, allowing the sand to return to its origin. Participants bring 250 grams of sand, collected from a location of their choice (for example, your street or garden). Under the guidance of Földényi, you will create your own Sand Jewellery brooch. As soon as the brooch is dry, it can be picked up at the Nieuwe Instituut.
