Marlou Fernanda - A Time for Everything

  • Film

On October 10, the exhibition Marlou Fernanda: A Time for Everything opened at the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam. With this multidisciplinary retrospective, Rotterdam-based Marlou Fernanda (1996) looks back on ten years of independent artistry and invites visitors into her colorful, personal, and sometimes confrontational world, where self-expression and the right to space take center stage.

Multidisciplinary artist Marlou Fernanda is in search of meaning, creativity, and spirituality. She is exhibiting at the Wereldmuseum , and a documentary has been made about her that premiered at the Netherlands Film Festival and is now showing for one night only at LantarenVenster.

For years, the Rotterdam-based artist has stood out for her visual work featuring major themes such as loneliness, racial inequality, and existential questions. Known for her colorful works featuring portraits of her own face, her style is increasingly shifting towards abstract forms.

About the documentary

In the documentary, artist Marlou Fernanda shows how personal experiences transform into colorful and abstract art. An intimate documentary follows her from Rotterdam to New York, in which she speaks candidly about family, loss, and the search for meaning.

Documentary filmmaker Denise Janzée follows her in her studio and during an assignment in New York, where her quest takes shape. Marlou speaks candidly about her parents' divorce and the muscle disease affecting her mother's speech. What she experiences drives her to intertwine language, emotion, and art. Determined, vulnerable, and always in motion, she shows how personal experiences transform into new and sparkling art. The documentary can be seen on NPO (Dutch).

The exhibition 'Marlou Fernanda - A Time for Everything ' has been extended until June 28, 2026, due to its success!
