Spring: the perfect season for music from composers at the beginning of their careers.
Scherzo Fantastique
First, the orchestra plays the Scherzo Fantastique by Josef Suk. In this work, which he wrote at the age of 29, he breaks away from his teacher Dvořák. It is humorous and light-footed, constantly catching the listener off guard. It is a joy to play, especially for the woodwinds.
Romeo and Juliet
Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet transports you instantly into a completely different world: the bloody world of the Montagues and Capulets. And within this dark world, you hear one of the most beautiful love melodies ever written. Just like Suk, Tchaikovsky was 29 when he composed this work. It immediately made him famous.
Shostakovich
After the break, you will hear Shostakovich’s First Symphony. Shostakovich wrote this work when he was only 18 years old: it was his graduation project. The symphony clearly bears the mark of a young firebrand: it is full of musical jokes, and the themes are tumbling over one another. But then comes the deeply emotional third movement, followed by an intense fourth. Shostakovich, as young as he was, had found his voice.
