Donnie Darko ^{25th Anniversary}

Donnie Darko is one of those rare cult films that a generation not only considered, but in which they recognized themselves. By showing the eighties not nostalgically but uncomfortably (a world of neat suburbs, conservative morality, oppressive school discipline and adults pretending everything is under control), Richard Kelly’s debut became a defining film for the early noughties. After Donnie inexplicably escapes death when a jet engine crushes his bedroom, he becomes increasingly entangled in mysterious visions and the hypocrisy of the adult world around him. Between coming-of-age drama, nightmare and apocalyptic satire, Donnie Darko remains, even twenty-five years later, a defining classic about growing up at a moment when the world itself seems off-balance. 4K restoration of the theatrical cut.
