JD Sports at Winkelcentrum Zuidplein has largest shop window worldwide

Jeroen Veenstra

JD Sports opened a shop near Manchester as John David Sports in 1981. It has grown into a popular British retail chain with shops worldwide. Also in Rotterdam. With branches on Lijnbaan, in Alexandrium, a flagshipstore on Beursplein and a shop in Winkelcentrum Zuidplein, which has just been expanded.

The existing location has been enlarged by acquiring the adjacent New Yorker premises and now occupies 665 sq m, a substantial upgrade from the temporary 448 sq m shop that was operational before. The new store immediately catches the eye thanks to the largest window displays of all JD Stores worldwide.

With this opening, JD finally completes its takeover of Rotterdam. After successful branches on Lijnbaan, the new megastore on Beursplein, and the shop in Alexandrium, Zuidplein now forms the fourth strategic pillar in the city. In addition to the four shops, and the renovated playing field in Peperklip, JD has become an integral part of Rotterdam's streetscape.

"Rotterdam is a city that has given us a lot, and with this revamped shop we want to give something back by being present in the neighbourhood. Like with the renewed playing field in the Peperklip - a place where kids can play, get together and dream again. We hope to start contributing to the city more often and give youth that extra push forward," says Carly Marie Egter, Senior Marketing Manager North Europe.
