Jared Grant and Discophonic Orchestra bring disco era to life

Jeroen Veenstra

Led by founder and celebrated jazz trombonist Lex van Wel, the 30-piece Discophonic Orchestra with horns, strings and vocalists performs the greatest hits of ABBA, Earth, Wind & Fire, Bee Gees, Wham! and others. On Saturday 20 September, the orchestra will descend on the new Luxor Theatre with Rotterdam resident Jared Grant as guest singer.

Lex van Wel, jazz trombonist and arranger, teacher at the Rockacademie in Tilburg and founder of Discophonic Orchestra: "The summer you went on holiday alone for the first time, the song during your first kiss or the opening dance at a wedding: music evokes memories in everyone. We bring those memories to life in the most beautiful way there is: with a live orchestra full of musicians who excel at their craft. During an evening where the magic of the disco '70s and '80s is celebrated in this way, it's hard to sit still."

Discophonic Orchestra starts the more than 2-hour show with no fewer than 10 strings, six horns, a rhythm section and seven top vocalists, including soul singer Jared Grant. The repertoire consists mainly of disco from before the synthesiser era, when music was recorded with a studio orchestra. This style full of energy and 'groove' has gone down in history as the 'Philly Sound'.
