Yellow Letters - Expat Cinema Rotterdam

Political family drama

Yellow Letters is a poignant political family drama directed by İlker Çatak. Actress Derya and theatre teacher Aziz are targeted by the government because of their critical views. They lose their jobs and their future is at stake. Together with their daughter Ezgi, they have to move in with Aziz’ mother in Istanbul. The increasing pressure of an authoritarian system puts not only their ideals, but also their mutual relationships under strain.

Censorship and freedom of speech

With great precision, Yellow Letters shows how political repression takes place behind closed doors: in a marriage, a family and a community. What begins as a story about censorship and freedom of speech unfolds into a moving portrait of people trying to remain true to themselves when everything is at stake. The film is topical, emotional and surprisingly universal.
