Soon, however, the independently shot and produced film moved beyond cult status - Tobe Hooper's spine-chilling nightmare grew into a classic. Hooper, who passed away at the age of 74, loosely based the film on the life story of the deranged murderer Ed Gein, who had the unpleasant habit of skinning his victims and turning them into masks or drums.
