The quiet life of New York writer Iris (Naomi Watts) is completely turned upside down when her best friend and mentor Walter (Bill Murray) unexpectedly passes away. To her surprise, he leaves her his beloved Great Dane, Apollo. The enormous beast barely fits in her small Manhattan apartment, where pets are also prohibited. As Apollo destroys furniture and Iris faces eviction, they both struggle with the loss of Walter. Slowly, a special bond develops between the lonely writer and her four-legged roommate. What begins as an unwanted responsibility grows into a touching friendship that helps them both come to terms with the past. Based on the award-winning novel by Sigrid Nunez, The Friend is a warm, witty, and moving story about grief, loneliness, and the unexpected ways we can find comfort in each other.
