Elgar's Cello Concerto is music about a lost paradise, from before the First World War.
Shostakovich's Sixth follows on seamlessly. The grand opening movement, almost a symphony in itself, breathes the same melancholy. But all the clouds disappear when the E flat clarinet starts the second movement. A frisky tune that seems to have escaped from Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol. All's well that ends well?
