Crashing drones, refugee flows and popular revolutions: the region around the Zwarte Zee has been a turbulent place since time immemorial. It still is, because in recent weeks the situation on the Zwarte Zee has deteriorated significantly. The war between Rusland and Oekraïne is increasingly expanding at sea towards Roemenië and Bulgarije, two NATO countries. Ships are being attacked with drones, sailors are losing their lives and the international grain trade is becoming increasingly disrupted. Meanwhile, it is the most dangerous shipping route in the world. In the six-part VPRO series ‘Rond de Zwarte Zee’, journalists Rasit Elibol and Jelle Brandt Corstius travel through Turkije, Georgië, Roemenië, Bulgarije and Oekraïne to speak to the local population about their lives in this eventful area on the outer border of Europe. During this premiere at LantarenVenster, we will take you behind the scenes, talk to those involved from home and abroad, and show a number of impressive moments from the series.
