Pride & Prejudice Theater Oostpool - Florian Myjer
Jane Austen's world-famous novel Pride and Prejudice is an unadulterated classic and considered a feminist masterpiece. Not only was the author a woman, the book also showed the 'ordinary' woman to a broad audience in the early nineteenth century. Generations grew up with this story and it formed the blueprint for a series of highly successful romantic comedies from the '90s.
But with today's perspective, these retellings paradoxically contribute to problematic ideas about the role of women and men. High time to make Pride and Prejudice the social gunpowder it was when it was released. Director Florian Myjer launches the story into the present to present a theater evening from a queer perspective that entertains, moves and makes you think.
Love war full of pride and prejudice
The Bennet family is in great danger: as long as the five daughters are not married, they will become social pariahs and without a male heir, their family estate will go to a cousin. To prevent this disaster, mother Bennet has only one goal: her daughters must be married immediately. The wealthy Mr. Bingley and his mysterious friend Mr. Darcey seem ideal candidates for this. A 'war of love' follows, full of pride and prejudice, with the five sisters as weapons in a battle for life and social death.
Pride & Prejudice is a grateful nod to Jane Austen and a challenging attack on problematic social systems, in which three male actors will take on all the roles. With a sense of costume drama, they pull the roots of the patriarchy out of the ground with brute force. Still festive and frivolous, but also uncompromising, vulnerable and contemporary.
