Playground: Afákaworkshop
Discover the Afákaschrift with Ronald Dijkman from Wi-Afáka and dive into the history and culture of the Surinaamse indigenous Maroon communities. You will learn more about this script and get to work yourself!
About Wi-Afáka The goal of “Wi-Afáka” is to make a wide audience, both within and outside the Marron community, aware of the unique culture, history and the Afákaschrift of the Marrons. They want to make people look at the history of slavery differently and present the Marrons as a well-organized people that has built its own civilization, including its own script. Their approach includes educational activities, workshops, board games and educational material. What can you expect? The workshop consists of two parts and is led by Ronald Dijkman of Wi-Afáka. We start with an introduction to the history and culture of the Surinaamse indigenous communities and Marrons, and the context in which the Afákaschrift originated. After that, you will learn how the script works and how you can use it yourself. You will get to work practically and learn, among other things, how to write your own name in the Afákaschrift. The workshop is suitable for everyone from 10 years old. There is room for personal guidance and questions. Ticket Combine your entrance with a coffee/tea and bojo for € 8.50. Bojo is a traditional Surinaamse cake, made from grated cassava and coconut.
