Majnun Amira al Rawi
Al Rawi and musicians from the AAO bring a modern version of this age-old story to the stage together, combining hip-hop, street styles and flamenco with live Arab-Andalusian music.
Majnun (pronounced as Medj-noen) is a production by theatre maker Amira al Rawi in collaboration with the Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest (AAO) and Maas theater en dans. In this performance, music and dance merge into a contemporary interpretation of the classic story of Layla and Majnun. This 7th-century Arabic love story is about an impossible love, about forbidden passion that leads to madness and alienation. Al Rawi and musicians from the AAO bring a modern version of this age-old story to the stage together, combining hip hop, street styles and flamenco with live Arab-Andalusian music.
Majnun explores alienation not as a shortcoming, but as a source of strength and imagination. In a time when cultural and social frameworks seem to be becoming increasingly narrow, Majnun invites you to break through the illusions and masks of identity and find freedom in the intangible.
The performance will premiere at Maas Theater Rotterdam and will subsequently be shown in Dutch theatres.
