Kunsthal Inside/Out: Sabine Marcelis
From Tuesday, February 17, an intervention by Rotterdam artist and designer Sabine Marcelis (1985) will be on display at the Kunsthal building. On the characteristic ramp that runs straight through the building, as well as in HAL 6, the Kunsthal's display window, Marcelis presents the site-specific work Continuum. The project is part of the Kunsthal Inside/Out program line, in which designers are invited to develop new work that is visible both inside and outside the Kunsthal. The starting point is the architecture of the building, designed by Rem Koolhaas (OMA).
Continuum consists of a series of marble volumes placed on the ramp, connecting the interior with the exterior, separated only by the glass wall of the display window. In doing so, Marcelis transforms the 25-meter-long passageway in the Kunsthal building into a space where people can come together. The green Manna marble, with its lively veining, creates a dynamic and layered image. With this work, Marcelis connects the distinctive architecture of the Kunsthal with the viewer and creates space for interaction.
Kunsthal Inside/Out
The Kunsthal Inside/Out programme line presents artistic interventions in the architecture of the Kunsthal, with special attention to the ramp that traverses the building. These interventions emphasize the iconic character of the architecture designed by Rem Koolhaas / OMA, with the Kunsthal serving as a gateway to the Museum Park.
Kunsthal Inside/Out invites designers to create a site-specific work that can be experienced both indoors and outdoors. Makers are given the opportunity to showcase and challenge their creativity in a unique way within the Kunsthal's unique space. This includes the 36.5-meter-long HAL 6 – also known as the Kunsthal's 'showcase' – and the ramp, a public route connecting the Westzeedijk with the Museumpark. As a result, not only visitors but also passers-by can experience the art installation during opening hours.
The combination of indoor and outdoor space offers an exhibition area of no less than 440 square meters: 60 square meters indoors and 380 square meters outdoors. The building's materials—concrete, steel, corrugated iron, and large windows—enhance the interaction between the art installation and the architecture.
The first edition of Kunsthal Inside/Out was curated by audiovisual artist and composer Boris Acket, with his new site-specific work Spaces Between Lines (21 December 2024 to 8 June 2025).
