Franz
On the eve of the First World War, the young Franz Kafka tries to combine his passion for literature with his daily responsibilities. With a great talent for blending realism and fantasy and a penchant for razor-sharp criticism of bureaucracy and humanity, Kafka lives in a world restricted by his battle with tuberculosis.
Kafka's life in a mosaic
On the eve of the First World War, the young Franz Kafka combines his daily obligations with his urge to write. During the day, he works at an insurance office. At home, he clashes with his dominant father and longs for peace. At the same time, he seeks stability in relationships with women, family, and friends.
A portrait of the man and his work
Agnieszka Holland does not sketch an ordinary portrait of the writer, but a fragmentary and playful mosaic of Kafka’s life. From his difficult youth and stormy love life to his battle against tuberculosis and the question of what will remain of his work. Past and present merge in the process. This creates a portrait of the man behind ‘De gedaanteverwisseling’ and ‘Het proces’. You also see a writer whose work has taken on a life of its own decades after his death.
