The Wildlife Film Festival Rotterdam (WFFR) annually screens the most beautiful and impactful films about nature, both domestically and internationally. The special WFFR Local program screens a selection of films at 21 unique locations throughout Rotterdam, including De Hoekstee this year. In addition, many of our local locations are organizing additional activities related to the film. This way, we bring nature closer to everyone!
The spoonbill—the iconic white wading bird with its distinctive spoon-shaped beak—is symbolic of one of the Netherlands' greatest conservation successes. Once nearly extinct in Western Europe, the species is now making an impressive comeback. The Wadden Sea offers a safe haven, but even near Amsterdam, young spoonbills are being raised. Using advanced scientific techniques, this documentary follows the bird's epic journey: from the Netherlands to Southern Europe and deep into Africa. Along the way, we discover how the spoonbill managed to survive thanks to the Netherlands—and what challenges await it in a rapidly changing world. Come see this film at De Hoekstee! A Q&A will be held after the film.
