Cooking with Status

Renée de Laat from Koken met Status cooks together with women with a migration background this evening. The dishes are connected to their homeland, cuisines, and family stories. The flavors have traveled with them: recipes passed down from generation to generation and food that reminds them of home.

An ode to women

During dinner, Renée engages in conversation about what it means for a woman to leave home and start over elsewhere. Food and cooking play an important role in this: as a way to take memories with her and find a new home. The stories of these women are reflected in the dishes on the table.

On the menu

The vegetarian menu features dishes from Ukrainian, Congolese, and Iraqi cuisine, among others. You will taste borscht, holubtsi, fufu, fried plantain, and bean stew. The evening ends with something sweet, such as daheen or künefe, with tea and coffee.

Koken met Status is a social cooking project by Renée de Laat. Together with status holders and people with a migration background, she cooks dishes connected to their home countries. Through recipes, portraits, and personal stories, Koken met Status shows how food brings people together, even if you do not know each other's language or background.

World Refugee Day at Fenix

From June 16 to 20, Fenix will be dedicated to World Refugee Day with films, dinners, conversations, and art. A week to reflect on what it means to flee, to live far from home, and to start over. The week concludes with the Night of the Refugee: a walking event by the Refugee Foundation, where participants walk for emergency aid worldwide.
