BRADA

In BRADA, LUSU takes the audience on a journey to the turbulent 70s/80s, a time of change and independence for Suriname. This multidisciplinary theatre performance takes a look at the consequences of centuries of oppression through the eyes of Javanese-Surinamese who strive for freedom.

Inspired by the family story of Dewi Kasmo, artistic director of Rotterdam theatre company LUSU, BRADA shows the struggle for freedom of 5 'brada's' (brothers) and a couple in love. Together they fight for an independent Suriname in an uncertain time in which colonial oppression plays a major role. They are soon confronted with the harsh reality and are faced with the choice of continuing to fight in Suriname or choosing a better future in the Netherlands. Will their brotherhood survive or will each choose their own path to freedom?
