Screening of A Hiphop Minute at Pass da Jazz at MAVIS

Jeroen Veenstra

MAVIS hosts Pass Da Jazz every Friday night. An early club night (18.00 - 01.00) with hiphop, funk, soul and related styles to start the weekend off right. Ray Escobar and DJ Cutnice spin and invite befriended dj's. There will also be cocktails and soul food from various chefs.

Friday 13 June is a special edition in collaboration with Black Soil Film Festival. The documentary: A Hiphop Minute will be screened. A sequel to 1986's legendary Big Fun in the Big Town. A Dutch film crew, led by Bram van Splunteren and featuring presenter Marcel Vanthilt, interviewed then very young rappers like LL COOL J, Run DMC. The Beastie Boys, Roxanne Shanté and Grandmaster Flash, as well as record executive Russel Simmons. The cult classic inspired a lot of Nederhoppers, including young Belgian Pascal Garnier, who became successful as a rapper as Krewcial.

In addition, Pascal Garnier is also a DJ and filmmaker. He has combined original footage from Big Fun in The Big Town thirty-five years later with new interviews with LL Cool J, DMC, Roxanne Shanté, Cey Adams and others. They look back at their early successes, personal struggles and the lasting impact of hip-hop.

Krewcial himself will be present and take his place behind the turntables to spin classic hip-hop after the film screening. The caterer this evening is La Casa de Comida.
