You Got To Have a Little Mazzel - De Leo Fuld Story
With Roland Vonk, Dook van Dijck and the Flamingos
In this theatrical performance, documentary narrator Roland Vonk unravels the mysteries surrounding Leo Fuld, with beautiful songs from his oeuvre by Dook van Dijck and the Rotterdam trio De Flamingo's.
The emperor of Yiddish song, singer Leo Fuld (1912–1997), sold more than 30 million gramophone records worldwide, but in his birthplace of Rotterdam, his fame has all but dried up. He was 'lucky' and escaped the persecution of Jews when he went on tour in America just before the war broke out.
Roland Vonk was one of the last to interview Fuld in 1997. In this performance, he follows his life path and seeks answers to questions that remained unanswered. Was Fuld's nightclub in New York actually in the hands of the mafia? How could he, as a Jewish singer, become popular in the Arab world? Was he really the 'discoverer' of Charles Aznavour and a friend of Frank Sinatra? And what about the admirer he married a year before his death?
Leo Fuld's story is framed in the theater by impressive songs from his immense oeuvre, performed by the Rotterdam trio De Flamingo's and singer/actor Dook van Dijck, who met Fuld as a little boy.
