Women and the City
In the 1950s, many young families moved into brand-new apartment complexes in Seville. The housewives, mostly illiterate, soon realized that there was no public transport, schools, markets, or entertainment yet. Women and the City is an ode to the women who set about creating these facilities.
The invisible generation of Seville
This story highlights a generation that played a key role in the development of the Spanish city of Seville. In the 1950s, many young families moved into new apartment complexes. The housewives, often uneducated, soon discovered that essential amenities such as public transport, schools, markets, and recreational facilities were lacking. The film 'Women and the City' honors these women who took the initiative to change this.
Women in action for improvement
These women campaigned for an extensive bus network and the construction of schools. They organized themselves to keep drug dealers out of their neighborhoods and strived for their own education. The film shows how these women were often ignored, yet nevertheless managed to improve their living conditions thanks to countless initiatives. Their contribution to the city remains underexposed. With this film, director Reyes Gallegos Rodríguez brings these women to public attention for the first time.
