Winged Kalpanarts
A powerful and visually compelling dance performance in which flocks of birds become a metaphor for our search for connection in a divided world.
In a time when polarisation is increasing and individuals are increasingly being pitted against each other, Winged poses an urgent question: how do you move together without losing yourself? Inspired by the phenomenon of murmuration (swarms of birds moving through the air in perfect harmony), the performance explores how individuals relate to one another within a larger whole. When do you move along? When do you deviate? And what happens when trust becomes the guiding principle?
A flock of birds has no fixed hierarchy, but moves with breathtaking precision. Direction changes in a fraction of a second; the whole reacts as one body. In Winged, this natural phenomenon becomes a mirror for our society: how do we find cohesion in a world that is accelerating and splintering?
The dancers form constantly changing constellations. They propel each other forward, catch each other, break out of structures and return. The tension between autonomy and connection becomes physically palpable.
As always with Kalpanarts, music is a driving force. Rhythmic patterns, live energy and layered compositions form a beating heart beneath the choreography. Indian influences resonate in contemporary soundscapes, creating a hypnotic flow in which body and sound become one.
Winged will premiere during Julidans and is being created in co-production with HIIIT. The collaboration with HIIIT strengthens the physical and rhythmic intensity of the performance: movement and percussion react directly to each other, like birds following each other's course.
