Once Qihuo has had her first period, she heads into the Chinese mountains with her two best friends. An enchanting road trip about friendship, freedom, and saying goodbye to childhood.
In the remote Liangshan-bergen in China, 14-year-old Qihuo sets out with her two best friends in search of a skirt for her traditional coming-of-age ritual. What begins as a simple quest unfolds into a magical journey in which the growing girls discover the world and themselves. Qihuo has just had her first period. The traditional Changing Skirt ceremony marks her transition to adulthood, with all the expectations of marriage and labour that come with it. But while her parents work far away and her grandfather has recently passed away, the three girls travel through the rugged mountains, far away from the world of adults. On the border between documentary and fiction, Whispers in May sketches an enchanting portrait of friendship, freedom and growing up, in which the final moments of childhood give way to the adult world. Whispers in May was awarded the main prize at CPH:DOX, one of the most important film festivals in the world.
