Wenteling
What happens when strangers must work together to awaken a sleeping machine? This September, Meander Immersief presents Wenteling at Huis van de Toekomst, Rotterdam — a 30-minute human-powered immersive experience. At its center stands a metal capstan that only moves when people act together, answering with the creak of steel, shifting light, and rising sound. Intimate and physical, Wenteling pushes participants to coordinate, endure, and reflect. No one can succeed alone: the machine responds only to shared rhythm and effort. Exhaustion gives way to pride, and the collective act opens space for personal meaning. Created by Meander Immersief in collaboration with lighting designer Thomas Brand, Wenteling explores humanity’s relationship with energy — labor, power, and responsibility — in a world of finite resources. With only four participants at a time, the work favors intimacy over spectacle, forging a temporary community through effort, light, and sound.
What happens when strangers must work together to awaken a sleeping machine?
Wenteling is a 30-minute human-powered immersive experience by Meander Immersief. At its center stands a heavy metal capstan that only responds to collective effort, answering with the creak of steel, shifting light, and unfolding soundscapes.
Body and collaboration
The work is designed to leave a memory in the body, carried through breath, muscle, and heartbeat. No one can succeed alone: participants must find rhythm and pace together. What begins as a test of strength and coordination evolves into exhaustion, pride, and space for personal interpretation — a collective action that turns into an intimate dialogue.
Light, sound, and energy
Subtle light and sound guide the process, marking phases and atmosphere while keeping focus on the machine and on one another. With only four participants, Wenteling chooses intimacy over spectacle, building temporary communities through shared effort. The work reflects on humanity’s shifting relationship with energy, labor, and transformation, asking urgent questions about responsibility and the use of finite resources.
