wand'ring wonder

Chamber choir Voci Volanti will give a special concert with Missa di Sancta Greorgii, or the St. George's Mass, composed by Herman Finkers and a work by the Norwegian composer and pianist Ola Gjeilo, Dreamweaver.

Missa Sancti Georgii – Herman Finkers (1990)

Herman Finkers wrote the first version, for organ and choir, of his mass dedicated to Saint George – not coincidentally the patron saint of Almelo – for his wedding on 15 June 1990: that is almost 35 years to the day before our performance.

Later, with the help of others, a version for choir and ensemble was created. Over the years, however, his need for a more intimate version of his own grew. He therefore rewrote his mass, in a version for string quintet, oboe, harp, harpsichord and choir.

Dreamweaver – Ola Gjeilo (2014)

The text of 'Dreamweaver' is based on a medieval Norwegian moralistic epic, 'Draumkvedet', first written down around 1845. In our century, Charles Anthony Silvestri made the now performed adaptation of the poem and set it to music by the Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo. The piece premiered in Carnegie Hall in 2014.

The story is about a man who falls asleep on Christmas and only wakes up 12 days later, on Epiphany. He rushes to the church and tells the people what he saw in a dream.
