Venus & Adonis Toneelschuur Producties / Agnes Laura Kumpina
Director Agnes Kumpina stays close to Shakespeare's original poem Venus & Adonis, which relentlessly exposes all the dark sides of what we call love: wanting to possess, persuading, forcing, and not being able to accept a "no". How is it possible that Venus, the woman who is 'complete', becomes so entangled in the search for that ego-love?
When the goddess Venus descends to the messy earth, she only has eyes for him: Adonis. She should be able to get him, right? After all, Venus is the perfect woman: she is smart, powerful, sophisticated. Hello, she is a goddess; there is literally nothing more she can do to become more lovable. But why does that unambitious Adonis have so little interest in her love?
In 1593, Shakespeare already wrote so sharply about something that still feels painfully familiar to us. Venus & Adonis is not a romantic love story, but a precise dissection of everything we mistake for love: desire, possessiveness, jealousy, pride, rejection... We see the all-too-familiar clash between someone who is completely ready for love. And someone who shuts themselves off. Will Venus learn that what she is looking for is not actually love at all?
