Tsjernobyl Dood Paard / Tiago Rodrigues
Dood Paard is once again creating a production with Tiago Rodrigues, who is making time in his busy schedule as director of Festival d’Avignon and sought-after director. He is writing Tsjernobyl, in which, just as in Women in Troy as told by our mothers, there is emphatically room for the personal perspective alongside the political.
Causes and Consequences of Tsjernobyl
On 26 April 1986, the Tsjernobyl nuclear disaster took place in the Soviet Union. Human error and ignorance led to the explosion of a nuclear reactor, one of the greatest natural disasters ever. The laws of physics did not take into account the system of lies, human shortcomings, national pride and hubris that prevailed at the time.
The Human Factor Central
More important than the 'how' of the disaster is the 'why'. The performance highlights the human side of Tsjernobyl, alongside the physical aspects and the impact on the environment. Why do people take risks whose consequences are unforeseeable? You wonder why humans turn away from their responsibility for the world they create themselves.
About Dood Paard
Dood Paard is a theatre company that observes the world critically. Humour and an optimistic conviction that human intelligence and creativity can overcome tragedies characterise their work. They are known for their pluriformity, open-mindedness and for stimulating a free way of thinking. The company works as a collective with a small permanent core and guest actors. Dood Paard develops and performs new Dutch repertoire. Joachim Robbrecht previously worked with the company as an actor, dramaturg and translator. He is now writing a play about feminism and the patriarchy, in consultation with Dood Paard. Previous adaptations of Een Poppenhuis by Henrik Ibsen, Reigen by Arthur Schnitzler and La Nozze di Figaro by Mozart already addressed these themes.
