The World in a Square

In the heart of Nørrebro, one of Copenhagen's most multicultural districts, a public park becomes the scene of an ongoing experiment in coexistence. In a country with some of the strictest migration laws in Europe, daily encounters do not always proceed without friction, and the specter of gentrification also hangs heavily over Superkilen.

An Experiment in Coexistence

In the heart of Nørrebro, one of Copenhagen's most multicultural districts, a public park is becoming the scene of an ongoing experiment in coexistence. The park was designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) with landscape architects Topotek 1 and the art collective Superflex. Superkilen emerged as a place for togetherness. A collection of more than 100 objects from 60 different cultures was carefully curated to represent and bring together the local residents, lives that normally rarely intersect.

The Daily Reality of Superkilen

All summer long, Bêka & Lemoine speak with an activist, an astronomer, a tattoo artist, a cook, and a babysitter, among others. They talk about how the regular users experience this space. The reality is, of course, complex: in a country with one of the strictest migration laws in Europe, daily encounters do not always proceed without friction. The specter of gentrification also hangs heavily over Superkilen.
