The beach

A performance about the beach as a social space full of tensions between relaxation and vulnerability, audience and intimacy. Thirteen young performers spend a day on the beach: a place where bodies are displayed and judged, where young people seek their place in a hierarchy of beauty and popularity.

The beach, one of the most visited holiday destinations, a popular social space and a place for play, relaxation, seduction, eroticism, and meeting, full of codes, scripts, and rituals. The beach, an environment of (half)naked bodies, water, exposure to the sun, and the gaze of others. The beach, both endearing and cruel. Everyone is equal before the laws of the sea, the sand, and the waves, yet at the same time, a hierarchy of the handsomest, the thinnest, the most muscular, and the most popular prevails, certainly among the youth.

We follow thirteen young performers to the beach for a day, to stay there for a short or long time. They pass by in pairs, small groups, or alone, with friends, family, or strangers. On the beach, a strange tension prevails between stillness and action, between the public and the intimate.

The Beach is an invitation to get to know the young performers better. What lies beneath their slightly sunburnt skin? The script for the performance was created by young people. For months, they met weekly at Hetpaleis for conversations with each other, with friends, and with peers. The result is a text that is both vulnerable and humorous.

The Beach is a production by Hetpaleis and multidisciplinary artist Sarah Vanhee, a performance with and by young people about sexuality, desire, and physicality.
