Roots van Rotterdam & Speelruimte A la Mira

From 5 to 11 October 2026, during the Week van de Toegankelijkheid, the Gemeente Rotterdam is organising a stimulating programme and city tours for both people with and without visual or social impairments. Artist Mira Ticheler has been asked to create a sensory, interactive art installation in the foyer of Theater Rotterdam. In addition to the art installation Speelruimte, the accompanying exhibition Roots van Rotterdam can also be seen, featuring 14 personal portraits by Gert Jan Pos and Mira Ticheler in word and image.

Discover the cultural richness of Rotterdam

The art installation Speelruimte consists of 170 coloured ribbons, with each ribbon creating a connection. Alderman René Segers-Hoogendoorn will open the event by connecting the first ribbon, after which you can participate yourself. Speelruimte is suitable for all ages and will grow into a colourful whole over the course of six days. The diversity of colours, patterns and fabrics symbolises the many cultural backgrounds that Rotterdam possesses. Come by and contribute to this growing work of art.

Stories from fourteen neighbourhoods

Together with photographer Gert Jan Pos, Mira has created 14 personal portraits that complement the art installation Speelruimte. This portrait series offers a representation of the current residents of Rotterdam, each with their own story. The photographed individuals were captured in their own street, meaning the images collectively provide a picture of the city of Rotterdam. Fourteen poems form a combination that artistically provides a glimpse into the lives and surroundings of the residents of Rotterdam. The exhibition can be visited for free daily in the foyer of Theater Rotterdam. Artist Mira will be present every day.
