Phoolbasia Poernima Dance Company
In Phoolbasia, Poernima Dance Company explores the meaning of aging for women, with special attention to her own experience as a Hindostaanse woman. In a world that tries to stand still in time, choreographer Poernima Gobardhan moves along with it. She chooses to make the aging body visible and transforms it into a carrier of depth, memory, and new meaning.
Gobardhan uncovers stories that are rarely told, about lives that have adapted, about strength that remained silent. Phoolbasia makes these hidden experiences tangible and asks the question: what happens if we no longer hide this phase, but place it at the centre?
On stage, an intense duet unfolds between Gobardhan and Bharata Natyam Guru Chandrika Sundararaman. Two generations, two bodies, two lifelines cross each other. Here, dance becomes not a display of perfection, but an archive of time, experience, and transformation.
The duet breaks through conventional ideas that dance is primarily linked to youth or physical perfection, and shows how ageing bodies carry knowledge, nuance, and expressive depth.
Phoolbasia connects the personal with the collective and explores the layers of womanhood, cultural identity, and body experience. By bringing together the classical language of Bharata Natyam with a personal, contemporary interpretation, Gobardhan creates a performance that is both ritualistic and contemporary. An invitation to experience ageing and timeless female strength in a new, embodied way.
