Philipp Rüttgers Trio
Pianist Philipp Rüttgers brings the melancholy and idiosyncrasy of Erik Satie to contemporary jazz. Together with drummer Sun-Mi Hong and double bassist Omer Govreen, he explores what lies between the notes: improvisation, hidden harmonies, and surprising interaction.
What happens when you bring the melancholy, serenity, and subtle humor of Erik Satie into the present? On his new album Re: Satie, Picturing the Invisible , pianist and composer Philipp Rüttgers dives into the enigmatic world of the eccentric French composer.
Rüttgers immersed himself in Satie's complete oeuvre and collected fragments and motifs, which he rearranged into a new musical narrative. Satie's restraint and sense of space remain recognizable, but take on a new meaning within the language of a contemporary jazz trio.
Together with drummer Sun-Mi Hong and double bassist Omer Govreen, Rüttgers explores what lies between the notes: silent tensions, hidden harmonies, and unexpected openings. The trio listens, responds, and allows simplicity to grow into expressive power. Subtle traces of the contemporary jazz vocabulary emerge, but the voice is unmistakably that of Philipp.
Re: Satie is not a traditional interpretation, but an adventurous encounter between Satie and modern jazz: mysterious, transparent, and constantly in motion. Live tonight at LantarenVenster. Line-up: Philipp Rüttgers - piano, Omer Govreen - double bass, Sun-Mi Hong - drums
