Open Table: Het midden van welk oosten? Theater Rotterdam

Pull up a chair at Open Table in Theater Rotterdam for in-depth conversations about current Middle Eastern themes. No superficialities, but meaningful encounters with food, art, and music. Let yourself be nourished, literally and mentally. Listening is also allowed.

Peace in the 'Middle East'

We have been hearing about peace in the Middle East for decades. What does this mean, and for whom is this peace intended? The impact of persistent colonial violence affects us all. Every day we see images of conflict and the disappearance of languages and cultures. This evokes a sense of powerlessness in many people.

The impact of colonial history

What seems far away touches us close by. It influences our view of one another and our sense of safety. For many Dutch people with roots in the region, it is close at hand. How do you support your loved ones who also feel the struggle in their bodies? We often view these issues through a 'Western' lens, which provides a one-sided view of a complex reality.

A new look at the SWANA region

During Open Table on June 1, you will join table guests, artists, and the audience in conversation about the SWANA region (South West Asia & North Africa). We explore how you can shift your perspective on the region. This will give you a better understanding of the news and stories, and create space for solidarity. Consider the question Nawal El Saadawi posed: 'Middle East – middle to whom?'

Table guests: Shirin Mirachor and Nisrine Mbarki Ben Ayad

Shirin Mirachor of the Rotterdam platform (A)WAKE and club/space MONO develops artistic and content-driven programs. She focuses on the WANA region and the diaspora. Nisrine Mbarki Ben Ayad is Poet Laureate (2026-2027), writer, poet, and translator. Her work moves between poetry, novels, and theater.

An evening full of encounter and dialogue

Meeting takes center stage at Open Table in Theater Rotterdam. It is not a debate to win, but a conversation to explore and share together. With inspiring guests, food, art, and music. It is a place to reflect on current themes and seek connection in times of division.
