OASE Invites... Jaasir Linger
Artist Jaasir Linger curates a multidisciplinary evening dedicated to Afro-Surinamese cultural heritage, music, community and spirituality. The evening is part of the Srefidensi series.
About Jaasir Linger Jaasir Linger is a Rotterdam-based artist and filmmaker with Surinamese roots. In his art and films, Linger translates Surinamese cultural heritage into narrative imagery. This year, Linger was awarded the Rotterdam art prize ‘Dolf Henkes Prijs 2026’ for his impactful, socially engaged art practice. With his work, Linger aims to contribute to the transfer of knowledge about Surinamese heritage for current and future generations. Specifically, he highlights the Afro-Surinamese philosophy of Winti, about which many taboos and ignorance still exist as a result of the Dutch colonial ban, which was in effect until 1971. What can you expect? For one evening, Linger transforms OASE into a platform for music, food, performance, spirituality and konmakandra (gathering) in the field of Afro-Surinamese cultural heritage, such as Winti. There is space to exchange knowledge and experiences, ask questions and discover different perspectives on Surinamese history and culture. We will announce the line-up soon. Srefidensi This programme is part of OASE’s programme series surrounding Srefidensi, the celebration of the independence of Suriname.
