NOISE Club Gewalt / Neuköllner Oper Berlin

In NOISE, the Rotterdam collective Club Gewalt asks itself the question: how can you function under the constant noise of information that predicts the apocalypse? A performance that begins as a hallucinatory seminar on an existential crisis ends in a cathartic immersion in Noise.

Imagine fluorescent lights above a screen showing a distorted PowerPoint presentation. Imagine a young professional mom giving a semi-intellectual TED Talk about recovering from postnatal depression. Imagine vintage synthesizers accompanying a musical song about your baby falling off the couch. Imagine the world collapsing. Imagine way too much language. Imagine way too little hope. Imagine hope.

We live in a time of polycrisis: we are simultaneously confronted with rising fascism, the arrival of the climate crisis, Western complicity in a genocide, fruit and vegetables full of PFAS, and our own identities proving to be riddled with (internalized) sexism, racism, and homophobia. Where a future of stability and progress was once promised, all systems around us and within ourselves threaten to collapse. Can we allow the noise and process it on an emotional level? Can we learn to accept the collapse of systems as a law of the cosmos, without ceasing our protest against injustice? Can we prepare for the polycrisis by letting go of our resistance to our vulnerability?

Through a derailing seminar on completing stress cycles, led by a group of chatty doppelgängers, the audience is slowly sucked into a collapse. Understanding and control are traded for an exercise in falling in love with being human all over again. Not by making the future look better than it is, but by learning to really listen to the noise. Cuz: never waste a good crisis.
